I felt compelled to write this story after a candid conversation with my father about the fears of every parent as they grow old and must rely on their children. In the United States elderly parents often expect nursing homes or some other sort of facility as their destiny. In Middle-Eastern cultures the children are expected to care for their parents for the remainder of their lives - this is no longer the case with the newer generation. Life for the elderly can be catastrophic and inhumane. There are many cases where the parents are left to the streets to beg. I chose to write The Shepherd's Mother as a cautionary tale for all.
