How do you console a father when he has just lost his son? Are there ever any right words?
One of my best friends lost his 4 & a 1/2-month-old son this week. It has been heart-breaking and difficult to deal with, and I can't even imagine what he is feeling.
His name was Lucas. He was beautiful, energetic, and looked just like his father. I photographed his baptism. As it turns out, those photos are the last professional photographs that were taken of him before his recent death.
I have been asked to create a collage for Lucas prior to his funeral next week. As I look at the photographs I find that I need to take a break for a few moments to collect myself. I see the happiness that comes through when Lucas is in his parents arms - editing and processing becomes an after-thought, and almost inappropriate. But I know I am tasked with something very important. I must honor Lucas and his family.
I'm sharing this with you because as photographers we are expected to really "see" the subject, and as fleeting as beauty is, we capture and encapsulate that one moment within a frame. Imagine now, when I photograph someone, I will never take that fleeting moment for granted.
